WEEK FOUR: Investigation

WEEK FOUR DELIVERABLES

Investigation:

Z O O (curiosity cage)
def. a facility in which animals are confined within enclosures
-Major animal collections* open to the public around the world now exceeds 1,000, around 80% of them in cities (Zoo," Encyclopædia Britannica, 2008.)
- Up until the early 19th century zoos symbolised power and money
- Many zoos primary purpose is to breed endangered species and reintroduce to the wild (Tudge, Colin. Last Animals in the Zoo: How Mass Extinction Can Be Stopped, London 1991.)
-When animals first arrive at the zoo they spend time in quarantine to adjust to their surroundings
- Within zoos in poorer regions apes have been known to die within 20 months in captivity (Baratay, Eric and Hardouin-Fugier, Elisabeth. Zoo: A History of the Zoological Gardens of the West. Reaktion, London. 2002)
- In February 2014, Copenhagen Zoo euthanized a young, healthy, male girafee merely because of being 'overstocked'. He was dissected publicly in front of a crowd then fed to the lions. Two offers to rehouse the giraffe were ignored. (Johnston, I. (February 9, 2014). "Copenhagen Zoo kills 'surplus' young giraffe Marius despite online petition."
- Constraints such as size and money make it difficult for every zoo to make the complete 'ideal environment' for every species (Malmud, Randy. Reading Zoos. Representations of Animals and Captivity. New York, 1998)
- Animals have been studied as having shorter life spans due to being susceptible to human diseases, materials in cages, and possible escape attempts (Bendow 382, Oxford University)
- Many animals in captivity have been injured in the wild and taken into refuge (McGaffin, Oxford University)
- 54% of elephants in UK zoos show 'stress behavioural signs' (Harris, M.; Sherwin, C.; Harris, S. (10 November 2008). "Defra Final Report on Elephant Welfare". University of Bristol.)
This idea came about as making the boatshed/place of meeting more of a place of confrontation such as the marae atea can sometimes transform into. This is forcing the public eye to a tiny conformed space and the animals made to be spectacles, their unhappiness on display and a confrontation made to face the fact of captivity. Although I do firmly believe in the breeding and protection efforts of many endangered species in zoos around the world there is still so much cruelty and disregard for animal welfare merely for human enjoyment.

"Animal rights people have got this idea that it's 'Kumbaya' out there in the wild. It's violent. It's survival of the fittest" curator Ron DeArmond said. "it's like Obamacae in here. They get care and feeding and don't have to do anything for it".
